AMD’s RX 7900 series graphics cards had a problem with energy efficiency and consumed too much power while idle or playing video. From the very beginning, it was clear that Radeon RX 7900 XT/XTX graphics cards are not very interesting in terms of energy consumption optimization, but it seems that AMD is trying to solve these problems in the shortest possible time. With driver update to fix
Last month, AMD released a new driver that optimized power consumption settings in some processors. Although it was not mentioned in the list of changes of the update, but this update also changed the energy consumption of these cards in gaming, but only in certain scenarios. According to tests conducted by German media outlet ComputerBase, the new driver released in December has improved the power consumption of RX 7900 series graphics cards in idle mode and during video playback.
Reduced power consumption of RX 7900 cards with new driver
As the tests have shown, the RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX graphics cards consumed 71 and 81 watts of electricity respectively before the release of the new driver update while playing videos from YouTube. The December driver update made a big impact on the power consumption of the cards in this scenario, reducing the power consumption of these two cards to 46 and 54 watts, respectively. Although there is a good improvement, the energy consumption of these two cards is very high compared to the RX 6900 XT and RTX 4080 graphics cards with only 34 and 30 watts of consumption in the same scenario.
In the change list of the December driver update, AMD mentioned improving energy consumption during video playback, but did not mention any improvement in energy consumption in gaming. According to the reviews, the RX 7900 series graphics cards with the new driver consume less power when the frame rate is limited. For example, in the Doom Eternal game and 1440p resolution, the power consumption of the RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX graphics cards has decreased by 34 and 57%, respectively, and has decreased by 57 watts to 90 watts.
AMD is going to release another new driver for RDNA 2 and RDNA 3 graphics cards this month (January). The current latest driver (23.1.1) is only released for RDNA 3 cards and does not offer any significant improvements over the previous driver (22.12.2).
