Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II game launch record breaking;  Increase in the annual income of Activision

Activision Blizzard announces that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II has become the biggest launch of the series and has led to an increase in the company’s annual revenue.

Activision Blizzard Inc Quarterly income report ending December 31, 2022 (the financial year of the company coincides with the calendar year) has been published. It seems that the big publisher of the Call of Duty series had a good time during the Christmas holidays. The company posted net income of $2.33 billion in 2022, up from $2.16 billion in the fourth quarter of 2021. But the biggest success of the mentioned company was the net booking (including in-game sub-transactions and other side purchases) which reached 3.57 billion dollars in the fourth quarter of 2022. Activision’s revenue growth this year is due to the success of COD:MWII and the revival of Blizzard Studios.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II delivered the highest opening quarter sales in the franchise’s history, leading to a 60 percent year-over-year revenue increase for Activision. The company says that the release of the online title Warzone 2.0 has contributed significantly to the increase in sales of this franchise in the last three months. The company emphasizes that the mobile version of the Call of Duty game has been accompanied by a double-digit growth in sales. According to Activision, the “next annual premium version of this blockbuster” will be released this year.

On the other hand, Blizzard’s revenue increased by 90% compared to last year, thanks to the release of titles such as Overwatch 2, World of Warcraft: Dragonflight and World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Classic. Due to Overwatch 2 being free-to-play, the title even managed to sell well in its in-app purchases, and Wrath of the Lich King Classic is expected to be a much bigger success than Dragonflight. Meanwhile, the online title Diablo Immortal is a money maker for the company.

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick released a statement regarding the company’s performance:

We ended 2022 with net quarter bookings and completed our mission to bring great joy to players. I appreciate the talented bands that have been able to entertain hundreds of millions of players around the world. We look forward to releasing a game in this historic year. We merged with Microsoft this year. This merger will enable us to better serve our players, create more opportunities for our employees and allow us to succeed in the competitive gaming industry.

It remains to be seen how Activision will affect Microsoft’s proposed $69 billion acquisition. Despite its good financial performance, the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) has accused Activision of racial and gender discrimination. The department is trying to take legal action against the said company.

Activision seems to have reached an acceptable position after two years of unbalanced financial conditions. The release of titles such as Diablo IV can significantly help increase the company’s revenue in 2023.
