Development of a new battery that charges 10 times faster than lithium-ion models

Rechargeable lithium ion batteries are used in all devices, from smartphones to laptops and airbags. However, researchers are working on new technologies and have now developed a new battery with a much higher charge speed.

Lithium ion batteries, despite their many applications, are not a complete technology and have many problems. For example, the useful life of these batteries decreases with time and use, and the presence of defects in the battery cells can lead to an increase in temperature and even explosion of the device.

In addition to all these problems, these batteries do not have a high charging speed and charging them is a time consuming process. To solve this problem, Russian researchers have developed a new type of battery that can charge up to 10 times faster than current lithium batteries.

Oleg Levine, an electrochemistry researcher at the University of St. Petersburg, charges a new battery in just a few seconds. News data:

“The battery produced by our polymer charges in a few seconds, which is almost 10 times faster than a traditional lithium-ion battery. “Such a feature has been demonstrated through several experiments.”

The key to achieving this new battery is a kind of oxidation-reduction (Redox) polymer based on “nitroxyl”. This material can be subjected to reversible oxidation (loss of electrons) and reduction (gain of electrons) during charging and discharging.

In a new study, the Redox polymer used is a type of NiSalen, which is a type of metal-containing metallopolymer. This material can be used to enhance electron conductivity, which is a limitation for nitroxyl-based polymer batteries.

The researchers tested different types of polymers in experiments, but only NiSalen had stable and efficient performance. In addition to high charging speeds, this battery also performs well at low temperatures, which is a problem for lithium-ion batteries.

Despite such advantages, there is a big problem, which is capacity. According to Levin, their capacity is 30 to 40 percent less than lithium-ion batteries. So we still have to wait for these batteries to enter the market, however, given the recent developments, we are expected to face a revolution in this industry in the next decade.
