Qualcomm is likely to unveil its next flagship chip next week; A chip that comes with a new name and we should not wait for the name Snapdragon 898 for it. In this article, we want to take a look at all the reports and rumors about this chip.
With its new chip, Qualcomm will have to compete with many companies in the Android world, from the Dimension 9000 and the tensor to the Samsung Exynos 2200. Of course, the competition is not limited to the Android world, and Apple is also challenging Qualcomm with the A15 Bionic chip used in the iPhone 13 series. But what will Qualcomm’s next chip look like, when will it be available, and which products will we have to wait to equip? In the following, we will answer these questions, stay with Digito until the end.
The name of Qualcomm’s next flagship chip
Before the introduction of the Snapdragon 888, we had a specific naming from Qualcomm, but suddenly after the Snapdragon 865, we came across the Snapdragon 888, which confused some users. Now it looks like this year we will see the renaming of Qualcomm’s flagship chip.
While the chip was reportedly called the Snapdragon 895 and 898, Qualcomm wants to use a new name for it. The name will probably be Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, and could make it easier to name Qualcomm’s future flagship chips. For example, in 2022, we will face the second generation and this trend will continue.
Date of introduction and release
Qualcomm is expected to unveil its next flagship chip at Tech Summit 2021, which starts on December 29th. While most of the products equipped with this chip will be available next year, it is expected that several phones with this chip will be introduced before the end of 2021.
According to rumors, the Xiaomi 12 as well as a Motorola flagship will be introduced this year with Qualcomm’s next flagship chip, although their global release will probably take place in 2022 and users will be able to access them next year. Most Android flagships will be equipped with this chip in 2022, but it will not be reported in Google Pixels, and we will probably face the second generation of the tensor chip.
Qualcomm flagship chip specifications
Qualcomm’s next flagship chip will still have 8 processing cores and will use Adreno GPU. However, there will be a big difference between it and previous generations, and that is the use of Armv9 architecture.
According to reports, the chip will be equipped with Kryo 780 cores, Adreno 730 graphics processor, Spectra 680 image signal processor and X65 integrated 5G modem.
Qualcomm has three clusters for this chip, which will include one, three and four cores. The most powerful cluster consists of a Cortex-X2 core with a frequency of 3.0 or 3.09 GHz. The next cluster will have 3 Cortex-A710 cores clocked at 2.5 GHz. The last cluster uses four low-power 1.79 GHz Cortex-A510 cores.
This Qualcomm chip is produced with Samsung’s 4-nanometer lithography to become the second chip with this manufacturing process after 9,000 dimensionality.
Performance according to disclosed benchmarks
To date, several devices with Qualcomm’s next flagship chip have been seen in Kigbench, the most important of which are Samsung’s flagship tablet and phone. Of course, as you can guess, we have not encountered the final version of this chip and its final score will be higher.
Despite this, the Galaxy Tab S8 Plus with this chip in the Geek Bench 5 benchmark in the single-core and multi-core segment scored 1211 and 3193, respectively. The device in this benchmark was equipped with 8 GB of RAM and Android 12.
Another Samsung product that has been seen with this chip in the Geekbench 5 benchmark is the Galaxy S22 Plus. The smartphone scored lower than the Galaxy Tab S8 Plus. In the single-core and multi-core sections, we saw 1163 and 2728 scores for this device, respectively.
Despite such results, we still have to wait for its introduction and release to the market so that we can compare its performance with previous generations and, of course, other flagship chips in the market. Of course, it does not look like Qualcomm will be able to beat Apple this year, and the A15 Bionic will still have the upper hand in the market.
Devices that come with this chip
As we said, most Android flagships will come with this chip in 2022, and companies from Samsung and OnePlus to Xiaomi and Asus will use it.
In general, the following handsets are expected to arrive with Qualcomm’s next flagship chip:
- Galaxy S22 series
- OnePlus 10 series
- Xiaomi Series 12
- Asus Zenfone 9 and Ragphone 6 series
- Nubia Red Magic 7
- Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4
- Motorola phones
As mentioned above, Qualcomm’s next flagship chip will have no place in the Pixel 7, and Google will use its own chip, which will be the second generation of the tensor. Of course, the mid-range Pixel 6a is expected to arrive with one of Qualcomm’s chips.
