Page-Roberts is a London startup that claims that with its strange idea it can increase the range of electric vehicles by up to 30%. In the idea of this start-up company, the battery pack is placed vertically between the front and rear seats instead of on the floor. The chairs are also installed in the opposite direction, contrary to the usual procedure.
According to Page-Roberts, using a skateboard platform (installing a battery pack on the floor) increases height, wheelbase, and structural complexity. The startup believes that if the battery pack is installed vertically, factors such as design, user experience and the cost of building electric vehicles can be improved.
In addition, the British startup emphasizes that the vertical battery pack reduces the height of the passenger seats and reduces the final weight, while also optimizing the aerodynamics.
As Autocar quotes Page-Roberts as saying, relying on the company’s optimizations, an electric vehicle will be able to travel 30 percent more distance on a single charge; Or it is possible to use smaller packs to travel the same distance. The publication also added that Page-Roberts solutions also reduce production costs by 36 percent.
Although the Page-Roberts idea is not specific to a particular model, it seems to be more compatible with small electric vehicles, especially four-seater sports models, due to the need for low height and short wheelbase. Mark Simon, director of technology at Startup Page Roberts, said of the company’s new idea:
“Our conceptual idea reduces costs, increases efficiency and improves agility, and offers more design freedom. “It means less charging time efficiency, whether it is possible to travel longer distances or install smaller batteries.”
As mentioned, in current electric vehicles, the battery pack is installed on the floor of the room. This increases the height of the seat and the height of the car in general. You must know that increasing the height of the room is not good in terms of aerodynamics and increases the challenges.
Since electric vehicles do not have steering, exhaust and refueling systems, electric sports models can greatly reduce the height of the driver’s seat. This feature, along with the shorter wheelbase, makes the Page-Roberts idea an ideal choice for electric sports cars or cheaper electric models.
Meanwhile, increasing the center of gravity is a negative point for Page-Roberts’ conceptual idea. However, the startup said that if the battery capacity does not exceed 75 kWh, the center of gravity will be the same or better than other electric vehicles. The company believes that if its idea spreads, the popularity of electric cars will increase due to improved mileage and lower production costs.
