With a new plant in the United States or Europe, LG wants to build a battery pack for Tesla from 2023. The Korean company is now a supplier of batteries for Tesla products, and models in the Chinese market benefit from LG batteries.
According to reports, LG will assign the task of producing battery cells for electric vehicles and energy storage systems to its new plant. The company hopes that Tesla will be one of the customers of the factory’s products.
LG’s hope comes as Ilan Mask unveiled the 4680 large cylinder cells last September. These cells are to be manufactured in two factories in Texas and Germany and will be used in the company’s future models. By using these cells, the manufacturing cost is expected to decrease and, thanks to improved battery performance, the walkable distance will be increased with a single charge.
Interestingly, LG has also begun to produce proprietary prototypes of the 4680 cell, but due to technological obstacles and challenges, it has not yet been able to reach production capacity. Maybe that’s why LG failed to sign a contract to supply the 4680 battery for Tesla; Of course, according to Musk, Tesla is in talks with various companies to produce this type of advanced battery, one of which may be LG.
An unnamed source told Reuters:
“LG plans to produce 4,680 cells at its new plant in the United States. “They want to build a new production line of 4680 for Tesla’s Giga Berlin in Europe.”
In addition to LG, Panasonic plans to launch and test a dedicated 4680 cell line. If all goes according to plan, the line will be launched on a trial basis in Japan later this year.
In addition to supplying batteries for Tesla products in China, LG has also established a joint venture with General Motors. The $ 2.3 billion company is located in Lordestown, Ohio and manufactures batteries for electric vehicles. The two major companies are said to be in talks to build the second-largest battery plant in the United States.
