RTX 3080 8GB graphics card benchmark - 17% weaker than the 12GB version

The RTX 3060 8GB graphics card is one of the new members of the Ampere family, which was released last month alongside the RTX 3060 Ti GDDR6X graphics card by Nvidia. These graphics cards were supposed to come as “additions” to the Ampere family so that users could choose between them and their older versions. Recently too Hardware Unboxed YouTube page He bought a device from the 8GB version of the RTX 3060 graphics card and compared its benchmarks with the 12GB version.

The changes of the RTX 3060 8GB graphics card compared to 12GB are not only in the amount of memory – but in order to be able to use 8 GB of memory in this graphics card, Nvidia has also changed the memory bus from 192-bit to 128-bit. Using a shorter memory bus also affects memory bandwidth. Memory bandwidth has a direct impact on the gaming performance of the graphics card.

Fortunately, the changes in the 8 GB RTX 3060 version compared to the 12 GB version are limited to the memory department. Both versions of this card are equipped with GA106 processor with 3584 CUDA cores and the thermal power of both cards is 170 watts. Of course, Nvidia has not changed the name of this graphics card, even though the empty place of the RTX 3050 Ti graphics card among Nvidia’s desktop graphics cards and right where the RTX 3060 8GB graphics card is placed is completely felt.

The YouTube page Hardware Unboxed has tested and benchmarked the RTX 3060 8GB graphics card at 1440p and 1080p resolutions, so that the card’s 8GB memory limit does not cause a problem. Of course, the results of the tests show that the memory capacity is not the Achilles heel of this graphics card, but the main problem is the memory bandwidth. At 1080p resolution, the difference between the 8GB and 12GB RTX 3060 graphics card gaming benchmarks reaches 17%, while at 1440p resolution this difference is only 1%.

The YouTube page Hardware Unboxing believes that the release of this graphics card with the name RTX 3060 8GB is a “terrible anti-consumer move by Nvidia”, because the name of this graphics card is still RTX 3060 and it is 17% weaker than the 12GB version. While it is offered at the same price! If this graphics card was released under the name RTX 3050 Ti, or if its price had an acceptable difference with the 12 GB version of RTX 3060, the situation would be much better.
