Rumors we’ve heard of weird overclocks for the Navi 31 GPU and the cards equipped with it weren’t true, but is there any chance that a custom Radeon RX 7900 series graphics card could reach such a high frequency? According to the analysis of PC Word, which was present at the AMD RDNA 3 graphics card introduction event, AMD announced that the Navi 31 processor and graphics cards equipped with it – Radeon RX 7900 series – are also optimized to achieve a frequency of 3.0 GHz; A frequency that is much higher than their official frequency.

What will be the maximum frequency of RX 7900 cards?

The reference version of the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics card has a boost frequency of 2.5 GHz, and the boost frequency of the RX 7900 XT graphics card is even lower and only 2.4 GHz. As you can see, there is no news of frequencies close to 3.0 GHz for the reference version of RDNA 3 graphics cards.

How many stream processors?

There is one more point that AMD needs to clarify, and that is how to count the stream processors of the RX 7900 series graphics cards. Both AMD itself and its board partners have announced 6,144 stream processors for the RX 7900 XTX graphics card, while all media outlets are reporting 12,288. But what is the cause?

The RDNA 3 graphics architecture has “dual processing” capability, meaning it can process two FP32 arithmetic instruction lines simultaneously. With this calculation, each RDNA 3 architecture CU can handle 128 FP32 processes, while RDNA 2 CUs can handle only 64 processes at a time. To reach the processing power of 61 teraflops declared in RDNA 3 graphics cards, the calculation of 6144 x 4 x 2.5GHz should be performed. If we want to calculate this number like other graphic architectures, we should consider the number of stream processors as 12288 and the coefficient of each processor as 2. Definitely, using the second method for calculation is more convenient for users and gives them a better benchmark to compare with other graphics cards.
