Samsung in the trap; Publication of fake photos of the moon

Samsung unveiled the “space zoom” feature with the Galaxy S20 Ultra smartphone, and along with it, Option to zoom 100x introduced that it can be used to record amazing photos. To prove its claim about spatial zoom, Samsung has even released photos of the moon with amazing detail. You have probably come across pictures of the moon in the advertising materials of this company or while surfing the Internet. However, a Reddit user has collected evidence and concluded that all those images are nothing more than using an AI model and combining data to create a high-resolution image. This means, all the mentioned images are fake.

The role of the camera in processing such images is not very prominent

Ever since Samsung released the photos in question, some people have tried to deny their authenticity for various reasons. But Reddit user ibreakphotos has shared some great information about how easy it is to make such photos of the moon. First, he downloaded a nearly perfect image of the moon from the Internet and scaled it to 170 x 170 pixels. After that, he applied a blur effect to this photo to completely remove the details.

He increased the dimensions of the blurred image by 4 times, so that people have a clearer picture of what is going on. Because it’s time for the fun part. He turns off all the lights in his room, goes to the opposite side, zooms in on the screen through his smartphone and offers a comparison of the tarnished image of the moon with the new image taken with his phone.

He goes on to explain that Samsung has used an artificial intelligence model that adds exceptional detail to the image. When an artificial intelligence model is trained specifically based on hundreds or even thousands of images of the moon, it is clear that the image created by this model can be more pleasing than usual.

As you know, companies use various advertising tricks to mislead the public. Critics had already pointed their finger at Samsung and questioned the authenticity of the photos published for months. Now we’re happy that someone has finally managed to provide solid evidence that the published photos are most likely not real and simply generated by applying artificial intelligence models. Hopefully this will force Samsung to change its stance on advertising and find better ways to develop its cameras.
