In the past few days, a group of astronomers around the world have released the largest infrared image recorded by Hubble to study the world’s farthest and oldest galaxies. Called 3D-DASH, the image is a high-quality exploration of a large part of the sky that allows astronomers to identify rare and distant objects for studies by the James Webb Space Telescope in the coming decades. Of course it must be said that This record will remain for Hubble for decades to come, and even James Webb could not capture such an image until several years later.

This image provides fresh information in the near-infrared wave for researchers to study the world for the first time. In fact, the farthest galaxies in the universe glow at near-infrared wavelengths, which is the longest infrared wavelength near our field of vision.

Prior to this image, astronomers only had access to such a vast expanse of sky in the near-infrared range with ground-based telescopes, which was of very low quality. But now Hubble has an unrestricted sky beyond the Earth’s atmosphere that can capture such images in very high quality.

Hubble Space Telescope Drift and Shift Method or DASH

To record such a large range, astronomers recorded a panoramic image of the area using a new method called Drift and Shift (DASH). This area is generally eight times larger than the standard Hubble field of view, which is recorded and processed in a mosaic.

Of course, with the DASH method, such an image can be captured much faster than usual. It normally takes about 2,000 hours for Hubble to capture a panoramic view of this area from the sky, but DASH only takes 250 hours to capture it. The 3D-DASH method can also explore areas 6 times larger than the full moon in the sky and be used in the scientific tools of future missions.

This record will now remain with Hubble for decades to come, and even the James Webb Space Telescope will not be able to capture such an image until several years later. James Webb is designed to capture close-up images in the near-infrared range, and such a field of view of the game will not be in his field of vision.
