One of the main problems of the new generation graphics cards is that the mid-range models will beat the flagship models with the release of energy consumption and show better performance. The difference between RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 laptop graphics cards
The main problem is that if users do not pay attention to the TGP of graphics cards, they may buy a more expensive graphics card for their laptop, while its technical performance is limited by TGP and in practice, it is weaker than the lower and cheaper model. For example, some versions of the RTX 3070 laptop graphics card performed worse than some RTX 3060 models that had a higher TGP due to the TGP limitation.
As we said, this problem also affects the laptop version of the RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 graphics cards. ComputerBase has recently tested two MSI TITAN GT77HX V13 and XMG Neo 16 E23 laptops, whose technical specifications are RTX 4090/i9 13980HX and RTX 4080/i3 13700HX, respectively. The TGP of the graphics cards of both laptops is 150 watts, which can be increased to 175 watts thanks to the Dynamic Boost feature (energy sharing between the processor and the graphics card).
For the tests, the Shadow Warrior 3 game was used with a resolution of 1440p and the highest graphics settings. Regarding the lowest energy consumption, we should also say that the RTX 4090 graphics card can reduce its energy consumption to 80 watts, while this number (minimum energy consumption) for the RTX 4080 graphics card is equal to 60 watts.
ComputerBase’s tests summarized the following results:
1- If the RTX 4080 graphics card with AD104 processor consumes 150 watts of energy, it has the same performance as the RTX 4090 graphics card with AD103 processor and 125 watts of energy consumption. Of course, the more powerful versions of the RTX 4090 that consume more power are definitely faster than the RTX 4080.
2- RTX 4090 graphics card in 80 W mode is 30% faster than RTX 4080 graphics card in 60 W mode.
3- In the range of 80 to 150 watts, the performance graph of two RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 graphics cards are parallel. When the energy consumption is lower, the performance difference between the two graphics cards is also smaller.
4- The RTX 4080 laptop graphics card reaches the RTX 4090 laptop graphics card with only 20 watts more consumption.
There is a chance that the RTX 4080 laptop graphics card will provide better performance than the RTX 4090 laptop graphics card, but it should consume at least 20 watts more power. With this account, the RTX 4090 graphics card is more efficient in terms of energy consumption, but it is not so powerful that its strange price is justified.
The issue of energy efficiency becomes even more interesting for graphics cards equipped with the AD104, AD106, and AD107 chipsets that are coming to laptops next month. Of course, many high-end laptops equipped with RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 graphics cards have such high energy consumption that the chance of the bottleneck phenomenon occurring in them is very small and insignificant.
