The story of Trump’s return to Twitter
Shortly after taking control of the social network, Elon Musk said he would reinstate any banned accounts until the company created a content moderation council with “very diverse views.”
On Friday evening, he decided to poll his Twitter followers. “Bring back former President Trump or not?” he tweeted next to a poll with “yes” or “no” buttons.
In the continuation of his tweet, he added: “Vox Populi, Vox Dei” which is in Latin and its meaning will be this sentence.
“The voice of the people is the voice of God.”
Users’ “yes” answers won by a margin of 52-48. Of course, it is not yet clear how many of them were robots. Musk himself stated that the survey was attacked by bots. Musk also tried to get out of the Twitter deal by claiming 20 percent of Twitter accounts were fake, and once suggested bots were responsible for his controversial poll results on Russia and Ukraine.
According to Musk, more than 134 million people saw the survey, although it ended with more than 15 million responses. This shows that only about 11% of those who saw it clicked on one of the buttons.
We’ll probably never know if Musk actually made this decision based on the polls or if he already made up his mind. In November 2021, he sold 10% of Tesla shares after polling his fans. “In any case, I will stand by the results of this poll,” he wrote at the time. But the Wall Street Journal revealed that he had already decided to sell the shares by September, two months earlier, as part of a predetermined trading plan to prevent insider trading by executives.
On January 8, 2021, Trump was banned from Twitter for further inciting violence (after Trump’s role in inciting the January 6 attacks on the US Congress). Twitter said at the time that Trump’s messages violated its rules against glorifying violence. From then until this evening, visitors to his Twitter profile were met with an “Account Suspended” message instead of seeing his tweets.
During the long and difficult process of buying Twitter, Musk said he would restore Trump’s account. Musk said in May:
“I think Donald Trump’s ban was wrong. “I think it was a mistake because it alienated a large part of the country and it didn’t end up making Donald Trump voiceless.”
It is unclear whether Trump will return the invitation to Twitter. After being removed from Twitter, he joined Truth Social. After Musk said he’d let him rejoin Twitter, Trump said he’d stay at Truth Social regardless of his re-invitation, saying Twitter was too boring. “They got rid of a lot of good voices on Twitter,” Trump said at the time.
Musk has previously described himself as a moderate, but in May 2022 he said he “can no longer [دموکراتها] will support and vote for the Republicans.” Just before the US midterm elections, Musk publicly suggested that his followers also vote Republican.
