The Witcher 3 next-gen update is coming in a few days, and while we’ve seen some footage of the new versions of the game in action, CD Projekt Red hasn’t released as many details as it could have. Well, thanks to the trusty pixel counters over at ElAnalistaDeBits, we now know exactly what to expect from the next-gen version of The Witcher 3, at least on PS5. A full cross-platform comparison is likely to come later.

Much nicer than the PS4 version, but…
The good news is that the PS5 version of The Witcher 3 looks noticeably better than the PS4 version, with much better lighting, reflections and various improvements in various areas. In addition, the loading time is almost 10 times faster. But these improvements come at a heavier cost to the game than it seems, especially in Ray-Tracing mode, which sometimes results in a rather low resolution and 30fps refresh rate. You can find the full analysis at Here Check it out, provided you have about 15 minutes to spare.
Following the release of the next-gen expansion pack, The Witcher 3 offers two visual modes on PS5 – Ray Tracing and Quality. Ray-tracing mode is a dynamic 1440p, and the average resolution isn’t much better than 1080p (around 1188p). Ray-Tracing mode targets 30fps, but frequent drops of 1-3 frames may occur in busy areas such as cities. That said, 30fps seems to be relatively smooth in this regard. As for the performance mode, it’s a (highly) dynamic 4K with a resolution typically around 1548p. Performance in this mode is not great either.
Again, there’s no denying that the next-gen version of The Witcher 3 looks better than before, but exactly what visual changes would be welcome. Maybe a moderate 30fps/40fps option without ray tracing that lets you get the resolution closer to true 4K.
The Witcher 3 next-gen update is coming to PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5 on December 14. The update will come with a patch for last-gen platforms, which seems like the game’s creators are aiming to bring the visuals closer to what you saw in the series.
